HGH (Somatropin) Overview

HGH, or somatropin, is recombinant human growth hormone produced using recombinant DNA technology. It is structurally identical to the 191-amino-acid growth hormone made by the pituitary gland. HGH stimulates growth, cell regeneration, and metabolism, largely by increasing production of IGF-1 in the liver.

Medical Uses of HGH

In children, HGH is used to treat growth failure caused by growth hormone deficiency, Turner syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome, Noonan syndrome, chronic kidney disease, being born small for gestational age, and idiopathic short stature. In adults, HGH is used to treat growth hormone deficiency and, in specific formulations, HIV-associated wasting and short bowel syndrome.

Non-Medical Use

HGH is used by some athletes and bodybuilders for muscle recovery and fat loss, and marketed for anti-aging. These uses are not approved, and HGH is banned under the WADA Prohibited List.

Safety Information

Common side effects include joint pain, fluid retention, and injection-site reactions. HGH may reduce insulin sensitivity. It is contraindicated in patients with active cancer or acute critical illness.
