Arimidex (Anastrozole) Overview

Arimidex (anastrozole) is a selective, non-steroidal aromatase inhibitor that lowers estrogen levels by blocking the conversion of androgens into estradiol. Arimidex is supplied as film-coated oral tablets for prescription use.

Medical Use of Arimidex

Arimidex is approved for postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer, both as adjuvant therapy for early-stage disease and as treatment for advanced or metastatic breast cancer. In men, Arimidex is used off-label to manage elevated estradiol, including during testosterone therapy and in certain cases of gynecomastia or male infertility.

Non-Medical Use

Arimidex is misused in bodybuilding to limit estrogen-related side effects of anabolic steroids. It is prohibited in sport under the WADA Prohibited List.

Safety Information

Common side effects include hot flashes, joint pain, and fatigue. Arimidex may reduce bone density and raise cholesterol, so monitoring is recommended. Arimidex is contraindicated in premenopausal women and during pregnancy.
